Independent commercial oversight for owner-managed businesses

Daniel provides an experienced, independent perspective to help established owner-managed businesses improve commercial performance, focus on the right priorities and ensure important actions are followed through.

Working alongside the owner, managing director and finance team, he helps businesses understand where revenue and profit are really being generated, identify opportunities for improvement and turn financial and commercial insight into practical action.

An independent view across your business

Established businesses rarely lack financial information, ideas or opportunities. The challenge is often finding the time and independent commercial capacity to examine what is happening across the business, decide what matters most and maintain momentum.

Daniel provides senior-level commercial oversight across areas such as:

  • Revenue and profitability by product, customer and sales channel
  • Pricing, margins and customer retention
  • Sales and marketing performance
  • Digital activity and lead generation
  • Supplier, technology and operating costs
  • Underused products, markets and commercial opportunities
  • Business systems, processes and management information
  • Succession, exit readiness and reducing reliance on the owner

The purpose is not to produce another lengthy report. It is to establish what deserves attention, agree a manageable set of priorities and help ensure the right actions progress.

When commercial oversight can help

This support may be particularly valuable when:

  • The business is performing reasonably well but growth has slowed
  • Profitability is not matching revenue or management expectations
  • The owner or management team has limited time to investigate opportunities
  • Sales, marketing or supplier expenditure needs greater scrutiny
  • There are several possible priorities but no clear agreement about where to begin
  • Actions are discussed in management meetings but do not consistently move forward
  • The business is preparing for succession, investment or an eventual exit

Working alongside your existing team

Daniel’s role complements the existing management team, accountant, finance director and financial reporting. It does not replace them.

He brings together the financial, operational, customer and marketing perspectives to provide an independent commercial view of the business. This can be especially useful where individual advisers or managers understand their own area, but nobody has sufficient time or independence to examine how the different parts fit together.

How an engagement works

Support can begin with a focused, one-off commercial review or a three-month programme.

The initial work typically includes:

  1. Understanding the owners’ objectives and immediate concerns
  2. Reviewing the available financial and commercial information
  3. Speaking with relevant members of the management team
  4. Identifying the most significant risks and opportunities
  5. Agreeing a short, prioritised action plan
  6. Providing ongoing challenge, support and follow-through

The scope is shaped around the needs of the business rather than applying a standard consultancy process.

Experience

Daniel has held senior commercial and marketing roles, including board-level responsibility within a £55 million business. He has subsequently worked with owner-managed businesses across financial management, customer strategy, digital marketing, business systems and growth planning.

Alongside his independent advisory work, Daniel is COO of VFD Pro, where he supports the development and delivery of financial management, business advisory and growth solutions. He is also a director of IRUN, an established website development and digital services business.

This combination gives him a broad commercial perspective: understanding the numbers, examining what sits behind them and helping management translate insight into better decisions and sustained action.

Start with an initial conversation

This is an opportunity to discuss your current position, the issues or opportunities you are considering and whether focused commercial oversight would add value.
